The Beatles and the Cold War

FOR GCSE HISTORY STUDENTS

Did four musicians really influence the Cold War and the break-up of the Soviet Union?  Explore how The Beatles became unlikely players in the Cold War. Despite Soviet censorship, their music spread through bootleg recordings, inspiring young people to question authority and embrace Western culture. “Soviet Beatlemania” sparked new bands, youth rebellion, and a cultural revolution behind the Iron Curtain.

A fresh and fascinating way to connect politics, protest and popularism in GCSE History, students will investigate how culture challenged communism, and why the Beatles helped humanise the West for millions living in the USSR.

Modern Day Mozarts?

FOR MUSIC CLASSES/GROUPS

Mozart transformed music in the 18th Century, the Beatles did the same in the 20th.  Like Mozart, their legacy endured - but did they really share his genius?

In this workshop we examine how The Beatles' music evolved from 2 minute pop songs into some of the most creative and expressive forms ever.  Discover how McCartney dreamed the melody of Yesterday,  Learn how Sergeant Pepper transformed production techniques.  And meet the fifth Beatle - producer George Martin - whose classical music upbringing was instrumental in shaping the Band's unique sound.  Mozart or McCartney? - you choose!

From monochrome to multicolour,  from modesty to mini-skirts, the sixties were an explosion of pent-up energy that turbocharged art and fashion.

Quant,...Twiggy... Warhol...Lichtenstein - just some of the many icons that revolutionised what is arguably  the greatest decade of change ever.

Testimonials

-----------------------------------------------

Marc delivered a highly engaging and thought-provoking session for our students at Channing. He brought 1960s themes to life in a way that felt fresh, relevant, and genuinely enjoyable. The girls particularly appreciated how the workshop connected their academic studies with music and culture, making complex historical ideas more accessible through an interactive format. It was both educational and entertaining, and sparked plenty of discussion afterwards."  Alex Morgan, Channing School

As a GCSE History teacher covering the Cold War, Marc’s Beatles workshop was an excellent addition to our curriculum and helped students build their knowledge beyond the course specification. His session brilliantly brought the period to life, helping students develop a genuine sense of time and place.

While focusing on the Beatles, Marc skilfully wove in wider themes of Cold War culture, ideologies, and the fears that defined the era. This  gave students a deeper understanding of the historical context in an engaging and accessible way.  The live performances of classic Beatles' songs were a particular highlight and really helped to immerse the students in the atmosphere of the 1960s. The students were fully engaged from start to finish and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.I would highly recommend this workshop to any school looking to enrich their teaching of the Cold War through culture and music.
